NATIONAL LITERACY MISSION

The New Education Policy of  1986 gave  high  priority  to  the  Non-formal  and  Literacy  Programmes  in  India.   A  project  was  manifested  viz.,  National  Technology  Mission for Education of Illiteracy  for achieving this goals. NLM (the short form of this technology mission) was established in 1988. Establishment of NLM brought a realistic change in the role and functions of SRCs. At the beginning, the objective was to make 80 million people literate within 8 years.

 
OBJECTIVES

• To achieve a sustainable threshold level of 75% literacy rate by 2005 A.D
• Impart functional Literacy to non-literates in the 15 - 35 age group.
• Time bound campaign approach to achieve the objectives by means of
  - Total Literacy Campaign
  - Post Literacy Programme
  - Continuing Education Programme

• Status of Literacy Campaign

• 574 districts covered under literacy campaigns 

• 302 districts reached post literacy phase

• 112 districts entered Continuing Education phase

• The literacy rate has increased from 8.86 % in 1951 to 54.16 % in 2001

• The female literacy rate during the period 1991 - 2001 increased by 14.87 % whereas male literacy rate rose by 11.72%.
